HOW ONE CAN OVERCOME DISTRACTIONS

Richard Fani

Key terms:
HOW: In what manner. The means by which something is accomplished.
OVERCOME: To win or prevail in some sort of battle, contest, etc.
DISTRACTION: Anything that can be able to divert the attention of something.
DISTURBANCES: The race to overcome distractions is a process which does not occur over night.

It takes patience, commitment and self-discipline for one to be able to overcome or at least limit the number of distractions that can prevent you from being productive. As according to the definition of distraction, we all need to identify what our personal distractions are. Distraction vary from person to person and sometimes what I call a distraction can be a source of strength to someone. Whatever the case may be, distractions hinders progress therefore must be dealt with. Below are five(5) ways one can use to overcome distractions in life.

NOTE: These are guidelines one can apply and begin a journey to overcome distractions.

1. SET PRIORITIES. By being able to set priorities, we make a first step towards limiting the number of distractions. Goals allows us to work towards achieving them and we become occupied by something which we would have created for ourselves. Goals gives us a role to play and fulfill rather something that comes out of nowhere and takes all the time we have in a single day all for waste. A person who have no priorities is already living distracted.

2. PLAN. When we have goals in life, for us to achieve them we need to plan how we ought to reach them. Planning provides for us a set of intended actions towards achieving our desired objectives. Therefore, by occupying ourselves with various tasks to do we become accountable when we fail to reach our goals. This means that we are going to reduce the number the number of distractions for us to be able to achieve our proposed goals. A person with written goals, planned schedules is not easily distracted.

 3. BE PRINCIPLED. You have managed to set out your priorities and even went further to plan a way to achieve them. What is only left is to be principled to your focus. In this stage we encounter procrastination as the number one factor causing distractions. Give yourself a reminder whenever you encounter procrastination. This reminder must remind you of what is important and why it is important and this will enable you to remain principled to your priorities and plans.

4. TAKE YOUR TIME OFF SOCIAL MEDIA. There was a time when the first thing we did in the morning or last thing we did in the evening was praying. It has now become a habit for most people that the first thing they do when they wake in the morning is checking their Whatsapp or Facebook Messenges, people rush to see who has 're-tweeted' their posts and some goes to check who has recently followed them on Instagram. Well, unless your business is run through your phone, if you are a blogger or unless you are promoting a useful product on social media; you need to stay away from it or at least limit your interaction on these social sites. Social media can become an obsession to a user who doesn't have a clue what they need or want there. Decide or plan on a time table to engage in social networks if it is that hard for you to live without it. The distraction by social media is a topic on its own and one I'll take time to write about in the near future.

5. ENSURE YOURSELF ENOUGH REST. If medical experts suggest you need to rest for 8hours a day to keep your physical and mental health, why would you deprive yourself of this free gift to a healthy you. Resting is not only health to each person but it is also a tool one can use to overcome distractions. A restless person is always feeling tired and feeling tired is a huge distraction cause it hinders progress. There is no substitute for resting, failure to rest will result in lack of concentration. A person who lacks concentration can easily be distracted by anything. Always allow your body its time to rest.
